Shell and UMS promote safety mindset among future engineers

22/03/2009

Kota Kinabalu, March 22, 2009

Some 50 final year engineering students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) gained an insight into Shell's Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) practices at a two-day PRESTIGE workshop held here over the weekend.

The partnership programme from March 21 - 22, in its third year running, was organised by Shell Malaysia Gas & Power and the School of Engineering and Information Technology of UMS, in collaboration with the Department of Environment (DOE) and Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH).

Over the last three years, over 250 students from UMS as well as UNIMAS have successfully completed this capacity building programme, which highlights Shell’s best practices in HSE and showcases how they are applied in the workplace using real-world examples.

The programme is designed to benefit student engineers as they enter the workforce, to help them appreciate the importance of good HSE practices, and recognise their roles and responsibilities in ensuring their implementation.

Present at the closing and certificate presentation ceremony were Prof. Dr. Amran Ahmed, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), UMS, Mark Pattenden, General Manager - Manufacturing, Shell MDS and representatives from the DOE and DOSH.

“Through PRESTIGE or Practical Environmental, Safety and Industrial Guidance for Engineers, we hope to create awareness among these future engineers on the importance of a HSE culture, to ensure they make health, safety and environment concerns part and parcel of their work culture," said Pattenden at the ceremony.

“In Shell, HSE issues are managed as a critical part of our business activity. We are committed to pursue the goal of no harm to people, to protect our environment and to manage HSE matters so that we achieve continuous performance improvement. This is our commitment as a responsible company to our staff, contractors and the communities we operate in,” added Pattenden.

The interactive workshop covered practical Shell HSE knowledge, tools and best practice to help these future engineers identify HSE risks present in the work place and manage them accordingly.  The event also featured speakers from Shell, DOE and DOSH.

Participants were divided into small groups and given a case study that required them to apply the HSE knowledge, tools and best practice that they were taught during the sessions to various real life scenarios. The top three team from the workshop were rewarded with book vouchers.

In addition to exposure to Shell’s business operations in Malaysia and its commitment to sustainable development, the students were also given overview of job opportunities available in the company as well as within the energy industry.

Pattenden later joined  Prof. Dr. Amran to present certificates of participation to the students who successfully completed the programme. Three of the participants also took the opportunity to share with the guests their key learnings during the presentation.

At the event, Pattenden also shared on another Shell's programme, the Shell Eco-marathon Asia event to be held in Malaysia in July 2010 and invited participation from local universities. Malaysia has been given the honour of being the first Asian country to host this regional event.

The Eco-marathon is a regional competition that allows budding young engineers to show off their talent in designing and building a vehicle that travels the furthest using the least amount of energy. For more information those interested can go to www.shell.com/eco-marathon
