26 October 2005, Kuala Lumpur SHELL MALAYSIA, the Kuala Lumpur FT Road Safety Council (Majlis Keselamatan Jalan Raya WPKL), City Hall (Dewan Bandaraya KL), PLUS Highway Authorities, Police and Road Transport Department (jabatan Pengangkutan Jalanraya) today launched a road safety campaign ahead of the "balik kampung" exodus for the Deepavali and Hari Raya festivities as a reminder to motorists to be vigilant on the road and to observe traffic rules and regulations for their own safety and that of other road users. Deputy Federal Territories Minister YB Dato Hj Zulhasnan bin Rafique, Ketua Pengarah DBKL dan Pengerusi MKJR, Tuan Hj Salleh bin Yusup and Shell Malaysia Distribution General Manager, Encik Mohd Rafie Ali officiated at the launch which was conducted at the Plaza Tol Sungai Besi (Southbound Lay-by Area) along the PLUS Highway. "Shell Malaysia as a responsible organization and a caring corporate citizen remains pro-actively committed to promoting road safety in Malaysia and we are happy to once again play a direct part in this very timely community service," Mohd Rafie Ali said after the launch. In conjunction with the road safety campaign launch, Shell contributed some 300 packs of 1-litre packs of Shell Helix engine oil and 300 packs of Shell Advance (4T) motorcycle engine oil for motorists and motorcyclists that used the Plaza Tol Sungai Besi between the campaign launch hours of 9.00am and 11.00am. MKJR-WPKL also distirbuted dates, mineral water and Hari Raya cookies to all the passing motorists. Mohd Rafie Ali revealed that Shell Malaysia had an on-going road safety education programme for schoolchildren in collaboration with Malaysia's National Road Safety Council. Known popularly nationwide as the Shell Traffic Games, the road safety education programme for both primary and secondary schoolchildren was initiated in the 1950s to instill early awareness about road safety rules and regulations, as well as to instill caring values such as tolerance, courtesy and responsibility while on the roads. For Shell Malaysia, this Deepavali and Hari Raya campaign represents another Sustainable Development initiative to nurture a caring society through safety-conscious and disciplined individuals. Mohd Rafie Ali acknowledged that inculcating positive values takes time and requires a continuous process. "This is the reason why Shell Malaysia continues to undertake this joint campaign with the like-minded organisations at festive seasons." "Road safety is a joint responsibility. If everyone uses the roads in a disciplined manner, incidents of road accidents, which are avoidable tragedies, can certainly be reduced" he reiterated. Issued by Shell Malaysia Corporate Affairs.
