| Safety Tips When Refuelling Your Car |
Don’t smoke |
Smoking in a petrol station is dangerous as it can cause fire. You can also be fined RM5000 or receive a 2-year jail term if you ignore the “Smoking is Prohibited” warning. |
Switch off your mobile phone |
Battery-operated equipment like your mobile phone could generate sparks. Sparks in areas where there is a risk of flammable vapours (like petrol stations, below decks on boats, fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities), could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or even death. The use of mobile phones whilst refueling a vehicle is also discouraged because it may divert concentration and lead to possible spills and accidents. |
Switch off your engine |
Sparks can also be generated from the combination of electrical and mechanical functioning of a running engine. Turn off your engine, lock and remove your car keys when refueling. This safety precaution will also help you avoid theft. |
Don’t get in/out of your car |
When traveling abroad during winter, don’t get back into your vehicle and then out again whilst in the midst of refueling. If you do have to get back into your car, make sure you close the door while touching the metal before you remove the nozzle from your car, so that any static electricity from your body (which tends to build up in dry and cold climate conditions) is discharged before you touch the nozzle. |
