The new Ferrari F60

All eyes were on Maranello, as Scuderia Ferrari launched its 55th single-seater racing car, primed for the Formula One circuits of the 2009 World Championship.

In a year that sees many changes in design and technology regulations, the F60 represents the pinnacle of motorsport, with the all-new Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), streamlined aerodynamic package and slick tyres. Ferrari, a manufacturer with the most extensive heritage in Formula One, settled on the name as a testament to its participation in every Formula One World Championship since its inception in 1950.

Stuart Humm, Shell Global Sponsorships Manager commented, "2009 will be a groundbreaking year for Formula One. The new rules and regulations that have come into force have provided a great opportunity for Shell to work closely alongside Scuderia Ferrari to drive technical innovations such as a bespoke fluid for the KERS and better performing lubricants".

The most dramatic of the rule changes for Shell in 2009 is the requirement that only eight engines can be used during the 17 race weekends of the Formula One season. As a result, the engines will have to last for a maximum of three races and cover up to 2,500km. With such an increase in distance, the technicians at Shell have been working closely with Ferrari engineers throughout the winter to ensure that the F60 does not lose power in its third race.

Gilles Simon, Head of the Electronics and Engine Department, was on hand at the launch of the car. He explained, "The changes to the regulations mean that, on the reliability front, Shell has played a fundamental role in defining the lubricants for both the engine and the gearbox". He went on to say that "the technical partners had played an important part in the design and development stage of the entire car".

The launch of the F60 does not mean, however, that the work on the car can stop. With the restriction of in-season track testing, Shell will be working alongside Ferrari to ensure that the car is perfected before the first Grand Prix in Australia on March 27.
