With a population of 1.3 billion people, China is on a remarkable journey of economic growth and social development, but faces formidable energy and raw materials hurdles. In this speech, Linda Cook discusses the global energy challenge and its implications for China. The journey to a sustainable energy future will involve choices, trade-offs and consequences. The landscape of this journey is shaped by a number of important facts and probabilities, some pleasant, some unpleasant. She highlights six of these “unvarnished truths”, one of which is that the world currently wastes more energy than it uses in a productive way.
