Royal Dutch Shell secures additional Canadian land leases
06/09/2006
SURE Northern Energy Ltd. (SURE Northern), a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc. (Royal Dutch Shell), today welcomed the announcement by the Alberta Department of Energy that it was successful in securing 5 parcels of land in the latest Oil Sands Public Offering.
SURE Northern, a Canadian corporation headquartered in Calgary, submitted the successful bid of C$101.2 million (around $91.5 million).
In the February 8, 2006 Alberta Department of Energy Oil Sands Public Offering, SURE Northern secured 10 parcels of land. The acreage secured today is adjacent and to the west of those parcels and the appraisal underway on those resources will be extended to include this additional position. SURE Northern also successfully acquired one parcel of land via a land agent, adjacent and to the east of the February parcels in the July 12 lease sale for C$5.1 million (around $4.6 million).
Steve Crane, President of SURE Northern, said, “We are very pleased to have been successful in this latest lease sale. We believe there is potential in these parcels that compliments and strengthens the position we established earlier this year.”
Since securing the land position in February, SURE Northern has started work to drill a number of appraisal wells.
Mr Crane added, “This is an exciting opportunity for Royal Dutch Shell and as we improve our understanding of these resources and start to consider development options we are optimistic about the potential to produce unconventional oil from these parcels of land. We have met and spoken with many people in the past several months and will continue to seek to work with others as we move forward. Our commitment is to be a good neighbour to the region in which we will operate, to the First Nations, Métis, and stakeholders including the Municipal District and its communities, to the Province and to Canada.”
SURE Northern complements Royal Dutch Shell’s existing strong position in Canadian oil sands through Shell Canada Limited (SCL). SURE Northern does not change the relationship between Royal Dutch Shell and SCL, and as the major shareholder in Shell Canada (SCL), Royal Dutch Shell maintains its full support for SCL’s ongoing business, and its strong commitment to SCL’s future success and growth.
