Based in South Africa, Huletts is an international independent semi-fabricator of aluminum products. It manufactures a range of sheet, plate and foil alloys which it supplies to customers throughout the world.

The customer was experiencing frequent unplanned downtime resulting in the loss of production and impacting costs.

Shell Tellus S 68 was recommended as an alternative premium product due to its proven extended oil life and anti-wear protection components.

As a result of this product change, the customer experienced a total annual saving of US$127,008.

Using hydraulic products offered by other suppliers, the customer was experiencing unplanned downtime caused by the degradation of the lubricant. The press was overheating causing premature thermal breakdowns and product oxidation. Shell was approached for a solution.
After a very detailed analysis of the situation, the Shell Technical Team recommended Shell Tellus S 68 as a product solution. This zinc and chlorine free formulation met the performance criteria of this application and is approved by the OEM, Rexroth. Shell Tellus S 68 ensures exceptional performance in hydraulic fluid power transmission systems that are subjected to severe heavyduty workloads.

As a result of the Shell Technical Team assessment and applying the recommended use of Shell Tellus S 68, the customer experienced a number of operational benefits including:
  • Maintenance of press operating temperatures
  • Decrease in product consumption
  • Increase in productivity through the continuous availability of the press
  • Elimination of late deliveries to customers
  • Meets customer requirement for a zinc and chlorine free lubricant
For Huletts Aluminium, the US$52,920 in calculated savings over five months can be attributed to an increase in production time. This financial benefit is a direct result of the change to Shell Tellus S 68. Additional savings are also expected to follow in the areas of component replacement and lower product consumption costs.
