We are working with others, such as city officials and partners, to help develop more energy-efficient transport systems. These include mass transit systems traffic management, fuel distribution networks and city planning. Today we believe building roads is where we can best offer expertise.
Road manufactures can produce and lay asphalt surfaces at lower temperatures than conventional processes, thanks to the Shell WAM Foam Process. The process uses between 25% -35% less energy compared to conventional asphalt.
In Latin America and India we are rolling out a simple, economic, lower-carbon road surface to replace unsafe roads that can become unusable in bad weather. Shell Instapave can be ready for traffic in as little as 30 minutes after laying.
The Shell ThioPave product mixes traditional asphalt with sulphur to create stronger road surfaces that can be laid at lower temperatures than conventional approaches. It has the potential to help roads last longer and to reduce CO2 emissions thanks to the lower temperatures and smaller amount of energy used.
