Advanced lubricants

Car owners, fleet managers and industry operators look for better engine and equipment protection and greater energy efficiency. Shell has developed a series of advanced lubricants that help meet our customer expectations, designed to save fuel and lower exhaust emissions.

Our scientists have developed a range of engine oils for heavy-duty diesel trucks and bus fleets. It includes the fully-synthetic Shell Rimula R6 LME, which can help owner drivers and fleet operators save up to 2.0% on fuel consumption.1

We worked with several leading engine manufacturers and car makers to develop the formula: it adapts chemically and physically to meet the changing needs of engines, providing improved protection against wear and deposits even under extreme conditions such as heavy loads and heat.

Hot spots form when lubrication breaks down. Our formula uses synthetic oils that are more resistant to thinning at high temperatures. It also includes anti-wear boosters that provide protection against wear in highly stressed areas of the engine. These special molecules are designed to enhance the protective power of the oil by resisting compression to keep moving parts separated and help reduce wear.

A high concentration of ash, phosphorous and sulphur in lubricants can block vehicle filters. This can increase fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Shell Rimula R6 LME is formulated with reduced levels of these particles (Low-SAPS) compared to traditional lubricants. It is designed to keep filters clean and protect the performance of exhaust emissions control systems, helping maintain the efficiency of the latest vehicle technologies.

Cars and industrial operations

We have developed lubricants for passenger cars that help to keep engines cleaner and make them more efficient. Our Shell Helix Ultra range includes Shell Helix Ultra E, which is up to 2.2% more efficient compared to normal mineral oils.2

We also offer lubricants that provide protection for machines in industrial operations, such as power, manufacturing and mining. These include the Shell Tellus range of hydraulic oils: in a carefully controlled test cycle one injection-moulding equipment maker measured energy savings of up to 6.4%3 in the hydraulic systems in which Shell Tellus S4 ME was used.

2 Compared to 15W-40 viscosity grade mineral reference oil and based on 10,000 miles per year for petrol car in UK with average fuel economy of 33mpg.
3 The actual energy savings depend on the application, the current oil, the maintenance procedures, the equipment condition, the operating conditions and the intensity of hydraulic power usage.
