What is LNG?
LNG is a clear, colourless, non-toxic liquid that forms when natural gas is cooled to around -160ºC. This shrinks the volume of the gas 600 times, making it easier to store and transport.
In 1964, Shell provided the technology for the world's first commercial liquefaction plant at Arzew, Algeria. Since then, we have continued to develop the technology behind LNG.

Follow the process from producing natural gas through to turning it into liquid and shipping it to customers overseas.
The fleet of ships we manage plays a vital role in transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Long-term demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is continuing to grow. Shell employs specialists across the world to manage an increasingly diverse portfolio.
Shell has LNG supply projects– either in operation or under construction – in seven countries.
