Reducing CO2
More energy means more CO2 emitted at a time when climate change looms as a critical global issue. The need to limit greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at a level less than 550 ppm will require the strict management of CO2 emissions. As well as helping energy efficiency, technology is helping us in two key areas: stopping the generation of CO2 in the first instance, or capturing it so it can be safely stored or put to use.
Carbon capture and storage
Identified as one of the most promising technologies for rapidly reducing emissions, CCS technology captures CO2 and stores it safely underground.
Growing tomatoes with refinery CO2
Imagine capturing CO2 emissions and supplying them to local farmers to help them grow their fruit and vegetables. Possible? Very - and it's exactly what our Pernis Refinery in the Netherlands is doing.
