Our innovators
Shell employs around 30,000 technical staff, including contractors, with a range of skills and expertise.
Around 10% of our technical staff carry out research and development at our technology centres located in 11 countries. Engineers, geologists, physicists, chemists and mathematicians work alongside biologists, anthropologists, and environmental, financial and commercial experts.
Their knowledge, creativity and ideas help us to meet the world’s growing need for energy in a socially and environmentally responsible way.

I am a member of Shell’s global strategic and innovation team and as a “game-changer” I devise technology solutions to industry challenges. With a PhD in Physics and Colloid Chemistry, I have been with Shell for nearly 30 years. My idea to transform plastic drink bottles into floor tiles came to me over lunch one day. Through the process we have developed, poorer quality plastics are combined with other substances to make a composite that can be used for tiles and cladding – and recycling the waste plastic is positive for the environment.
