Charlie Williams
Shell Chief Scientist Well Engineering and Production Technology.
I enjoy finding solutions to real-world problems.
Charlie has been with Shell for over 38 years. He was appointed Chief Scientist Well Engineering and Production Technology in 2005.
Born in Yokohoma, Japan, Charlie grew up in Tennessee, the USA. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, specialising in thermodynamics and heat transfer. He served in the US army and is an honours graduate from the NCO Academy.
He held a number of engineering, R&D, operations and management positions with Shell, providing technical advice for special projects around the world. His work has included helping to develop high pressure high temperature wells and specialised drilling equipment for extreme environments such as deepwater. Charlie led the successful restoration of the Mars platform in the Gulf of Mexico after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The project received the National Ocean Industries Association award, the UK Energy Institute award for technology and was named Offshore Engineering project of the year. Charlie received a corporate leadership award from the US Department of the Interior.
Married to his wife Susan for 40 years, Charlie has one daughter, Emily. He enjoys photography and making videos in his free time.
