About Shell LiveWIRE Programme

LiveWIRE was started by Shell in Scotland in 1982 and programmes now operate in 20 countries and more are coming in the pipeline. LiveWIRE is one of the Corporate Social Investment programmes supported and promoted globally by Shell. In each country the local Shell company leads with the introduction of the programme. It is a programme that seeks to encourage young people to explore starting their own business as a viable career choice.

The programme and materials are customised for every country to meet the culture, aspirations and needs of the country and its young people. All materials and training are offered in local language.

Activities:

Common to all LiveWIRE schemes, is the aim of improving the opportunities for young people (normally in the 16 to 30 age range) to develop themselves and to realise their potential, principally by creating and developing their own businesses.
Typically, a LiveWIRE programme may contain some (and in some cases all) of the following services for young people.

  1. Enquiry Service: By providing information young people are introduced to the idea of starting a business: how to find and develop a business idea, where to seek help and how to prepare a business plan.
  2. Personal Advice: In many instances the young person will also be offered the opportunity to link with a LiveWIRE volunteer advisor and, through the advisor, to further advice and training. Advisors are volunteers with direct small business experience or are from banks or accountancy firms. Others are previous beneficiaries from the LiveWIRE programme.
  3. Business Planning And Ideas Generation Workshops: These are run for groups of young people to stimulate exchange of ideas and encourage good planning.
  4. Awards: An awards programme which recognises and celebrates the success and effort of young people in developing business plans or in their first year in business. This is invariably good news and attracts good publicity for the young people and for Shell. It also provides a platform and an opportunity for dialogue with government. Awards may also be given for best progress in growing and developing the business over the first two or three years.
