Shell Indonesia held the ”Shell Advance Safety Riding: The Real Biker” workshop for 100 Road Safety Ambassadors at Gedung Indomobil Jaya Agung, Tangerang. The workshop is part of Shell’s commitment on road safety in Indonesia. Road Safety Ambassadors who participated hailed from various biker community representatives in the Greater Jakarta area. The workshop was also held to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Suzuki-2 Wheels (S2W) community with the purpose of educating road users on road safety, especially for bikers. All ambassadors received materials on understanding, skill and road safety ethics for all road users. Darwin Silalahi, Country Chairman and President Director of PT Shell Indonesia, said, ”Through this program, we hope there will be more people aware of the importance of road safety. The duty of the ambassadors is to socialize road safety and road ethics to the public, especially within their own community.” Darwin is also proud of S2W and other biker communities who participated in the workshop. “Biker communities participation in this workshop show that they are willing to become riders that prioritize ethics in using the road safely,” he added. Apart from S2W, Shell Indonesia collaborates with the Road Safety Association (RSA) in organizing the workshop. RSA is a biker communities’ association that facilitates the workshop materials. Syamsul Ma’arif, Board Director of Road Safety Association said, “RSA was established in 2005 based on concerns of road users’ safety. We support this event because we all have a similar vision in creating a culture of safe and comfortable roads in Indonesia. We believe that contribution from many parties, like Shell, will be very meaningful to the establishment of road safety culture here. On the same occasion, Yudhi Dharma, Head of S2W, thanked Shell Indonesia for supporting S2W’s birthday celebration and providing the Road Safety Ambassadors workshop for representatives of biker’s communities in the Greater Jakarta area. ”We are aware that nowadays there are many bikers who do group riding and often receive negative response from the public. It happens because often when they are group riding, they break some rules and ignore some ethics in using the road. The workshop facilitated by Shell Indonesia aims to change the bikers’ ethics, so the negative image will be erased,” Yudha added. All Road Safety Ambassadors, who represented many biker communities, made a declaration to obey traffic regulations and prioritize safe riding. 1,000 bikers from various communities witnessed the declaration. On a separate occasion some time ago, Adjar Triyadi, Vice Traffic Director of the Indonesian Police Force (Wakil Direktorat Lalu Lintas Polda Metro Jaya) said, more than 30,000 people died in traffic accidents every year, where most of the casualties are bikers. Furthermore, on any given day, Jakarta and the surrounding areas add 1,000 new motorcycles. Due to fuel price hike, the number of motorcycle tends to rise due to the shift from car to motorcycle usage. Darwin Silalahi added, ”The close-knit relationship among the members of the biker communities will help the ambassadors in spreading the safety riding virus. Hopefully this workshop will be able to create road users who understand fully the etiquettes in using the road and, of course, obeying the rules.” Shell Indonesia is very committed about road safety. This commitment is realized through a variety of road safety programs. Recently, Shell Indonesia launched the “Road Safety: Think Safety, Act Safely” program which was aimed at elementary school students. “We hope from these programs, thoughts on safety and safe actions on the road will be socialized and can effectively minimize the number of accidents on the road, ” said Darwin, ending the conversation.
