In preparation for Eidul Fitr 2008, Shell Indonesia initiated “Shell Advance Mudik Aman” program which is aimed to improve the road safety of bikers during the holiday's traditional “mudik” (one's coming home to city of origin after working most of the year away from home or parents' home). There are two parts of the program: before Eidul Fitri and during mudik period. “Shell Advance Mudik Aman” will provide booths with attractive facilities such as safety tips for bikers, discounts for every purchase of Advance lubricants, free motorcycle check-up, and mudik coupon. For the first stage, the program will be held on 20-21 September 2008. The second stage will be held during the mudik period, on 24-30 September 2008. “Shell Advance Mudik Aman” booth will be located at some locations in Jabodetabek. On September 20, the Shell Advance booth is located at Lapangan Bina Putera, Jl. Beringin Raya – Tangerang, and on September 21, the booth is at the field of Mayor's Office of Depok, Jl. Margonda Raya – Depok. Jakarta residents can visit the Shell Advance booth at Parkir Timur Senayan for two days on 20-21 September. Shell Indonesia is committed to decrease the number of traffic accidents which rise every year. Shell Indonesia realizes that there will be a rise in numbers of people going back home (mudik) for this year's Eid. Ministry of Transportation predicts an increase of people returning home (mudik) by motorcycles to be 2.5 million people, compared to last year which was only 2 million. The increase of bikers going back home for Eid receives the attention of Ministry of Transportation, Traffic Police, Indonesian Transportation Society (Masyarakat Transportasi Indonesia/MTI) and private companies because they are concerned about the bikers’ road safety. This is supported by the data that shows 90% of 236 traffic accidents during the mudik period at last year's Eid involved bikers. The continuously increasing number of vehicles, lack of traffic regulation obedience, and lack of awareness of vehicle conditions are triggers of some of the traffic accidents. Darwin Silalahi, Country Chairman and President Director of PT Shell Indonesia said, “Shell Indonesia is very concerned about road safety. Through the 'Shell Advance Mudik Aman' program, we'd like to participate in encouraging road safety during the Eid mudik period. This program socializes the importance of road safety and also helps to prepare vehicles so that they're ready to be used for mudik.” Bikers who stop by at the “Shell Advance Mudik Aman” booth and buy Shell Advance will receive a coupon that can be used at any “Shell Advance Mudik Aman” booths along the mudik routes, Northern and Southern Java lanes. In the Northern route, “Shell Advance Mudik Aman” route is located at Rumah Makan Delima, in the Cikampek Pamanukan area, while the booth in the Southern route is located at Rumah Makan Sri Rezeki, Cianjur. All bikers who have the coupon can exchange their coupons at the above restaurants and are eligible for free food & drinks, blood pressure check-up, reflexology massage treatment, and games with prizes. “By having our mudik booths, we hope bikers can get some rest and check their motorcycles to be safe so they can continue their journey feeling refreshed. Therefore, it is expected for the road safety level to improve,” added Darwin. Shell Indonesia is active in socializing road safety with its program, “Road Safety.” Last June, it launched Road Safety School Program emphasizing a theme “Think Safety, Act Safely” which involved more than 1,000 elementary school students in Jakarta. Shell Indonesia believes that the education for driving ethics and rules should be given at early age because children are the country’s future assets. With the commitment to push down the number of traffic accidents, all Shell Indonesia lines of business have road safety program. Several programs have been done, such as: Free Safety Driving Course for college students, Safety Riding Training for biker clubs and regular training for Shell hauliers. Just recently, Shell Advance also held a workshop for 100 Road Safety Ambassadors (Duta Keselamatan Berkendara, DKB) from biker communities around Jabodetabek area. Darwin Silalahi added, “We hope our various road safety programs will result in the improvement of public's awareness on road ethics and road safety so that the number of traffic accidents can also be pushed down.”
