Around 150 students from SDN 05, Tebet Barat, Jakarta, participated in Road Safety Goes to School program initiated by PT Shell Indonesia. The program that is started during the mudik (annual Indonesian tradition where one goes home to city of origin or parents' house during Eid holiday), is called “Mudik Aman dan Gembira”. The program also introduced Road Safety’s mascots named Tisa (short from “Think Safety”) and Aksa (short from “Act Safely”). Road Safety Goes to School Program is one of social investment programs by PT Shell Indonesia as a part of on going “Road Safety: Think Safety, Act Safely” program series. Road Safety Goes to School program involves 600 students from 4 elementary schools in Jakarta. The aim of the program is also to give positive contributions to the community. Therefore, the schools involved were the ones near Shell’s retail sites. Ministry of Transportation predicted the number of Lebaran travelers using ground, sea and air transportation will be 15,8 millions travelers, or an increase of 6,14 percent compared to last year. The majority of the travelers use ground transportation, in which 90% of it involves motorcycles. Growing number of travelers generate concerns on the increasing number of traffic accidents. This can be understood because there is still poor road infrastructure and very low road safety awareness. Darwin Silalahi, President Director and Country Chairman, PT Shell Indonesia says, ”Program Road Safety: Goes to School is one of PT Shell Indonesia’s concerns and commitments to push down number of traffic accidents. We believe that if we are consistent in developing road safety values at early age, then we will gain better generation. We hope that this year's mudik can be managed to be more organized, safe and fun.” Sri Endah, Social Investment Manager PT Shell Indonesia, says, “By Road Safety Goes to School program, we'd like the children to take taking part in creating road safety awareness, especially in mudik Lebaran festivity. Mudik can be more fun if they can help and remind their parents or family and communities on road safety awareness.” At the same occasion, AKBP Subono, Head of Community Education, Indonesian National Police, was very enthusiastic about the Road Safety Goes to School program by Shell Indonesia. “Before, the socialization of road safety during mudik had always been targeted at adults. However, mudik for Eid also belongs to the children. Shell's program is a great positive step that should be followed by others. Through the program, we hope that the children can be agents of change, to remind their parents on the importance of road safety.” Road Safety Goes to School program is a fun learning program. The students gained various knowledge of road safety, starting from the introduction and function on road signs, preparing the vehicles, traffic regulations to the job description of the traffic police officers. All materials were directly given by traffic police officers. To prevent avoid children from being bored, the program also had is also create education games like quiz and puzzle. The very interesting part of the program was a story telling session of “Pulang Kampung Aman Yuuuk . . .” by Road Safety mascots, Tisa and Aksa. 11 years old student, Ishaq Mahmudil Hakim, says, ”I am happy participating in Road Safety program. Me and my family will go mudik and I will remember what need to be done for road safety.” SDN 05 Tebet Barat Principle, Supriyati says, ”We are very happy about the Road Safety Goes to School program. The program is not only fun for the children, but it's also very useful. We all know that the number of accidents tends to increase and the children need to be informed about the current conditions.”
