Shell LiveWIRE Kicks Off Business Start-Up Awards 2009 (English)

05/02/2009

Shell Indonesia invites potential youth entrepreneurs in Java and Bali to participate in Shell LiveWIRE Business Start-Up Awards 2009

PT Shell Indonesia launches “Shell LiveWIRE Business Start-up Awards 2009” (BSA 2009) in an effort to spark the entrepreneurship spirit in youths and to discover new young entrepreneurs who can be inspirational for other youths.

Shell LiveWIRE BSA 2009 is part of Shell Indonesia’s social investment programs to reward Indonesian youths for starting-up and running their business, and has the potential for further development.

Darwin Silalahi, President Director and Country Chairman of PT Shell Indonesia said, “It is Shell's commitment to give something real to the society surrounding our business sites. With that spirit in mind, we'd like to have a positive role in developing Indonesia's economy, in particular to reduce the number of youth unemployment.”

Sudradjat Rasyid, Deputy of Youth Entrepreneurship and Sports Industry for Minister of Youth and Sports for Republic of Indonesia said, “We fully support and appreciate the LiveWIRE Business Start-Up Awards 2009 program which is organized by PT Shell Indonesia. This program surely can maximize the potential of Indonesian youths in developing their country.”

Based on the statistics released from BPS (Central Bureau of Statistics), the number of unemployment in Indonesia in February 2008 reached 9.43 million people, 4.5 million of which are graduates from high school, diploma programs, and universities. From that number, 1.1 million people are university graduates. According to BPS, there was a 54% increase of unemployed university graduates, compared to 2007's figure, which were 740,000 people. This might be  the  result of  the university graduates’ general mindset to look for jobs in industries  rather than creating jobs.

Through BSA 2009, Shell Indonesia seeks for the best start-up young entrepreneurs (18-32 years old) who are in business for at least for 3 months and maximum for 24 months and whose businesses have the potentials to be developed further. PT Shell Indonesia will grant prizes of Rp 20 million each for 10 winners. In addition to that,  Shell will provide coaching and mentoring to assist winners in developing their business. Registration for BSA 2009 starts from 5 February  2009 to  29 April  2009. More information about BSA 2009 can be found in the official website of Shell LiveWIRE Indonesia at www.livewire-indonesia.org or UKM Center—FEUI at www.ukm-center.org.

BSA 2008 has resulted in nine winners with various types of businesses. In less than one year, these winners have shown greater success supported by the grant, media exposure, and coaching as well as mentoring they received from the program. In 2009, Shell hopes to attract more young entrepreneurs to participate in the competition.
