Shell Conducts Safety & Teacher Empowerment Program (STEP) (English)

29/10/2007

In the framework of Shell Safety Days 2007, Shell conducts Safety & Teacher Empowerment Program (STEP) in Jakarta on 29-31 October 2007. This workshop will focus on safety standards improvement and prevent violence at school especially from bullying cases. Sessions for safety standards includes Emergency Response, Road Safety, Basic Fire Fighting, Recycling and Risk Mitigation. Margani M. Mustar, Head of High Education for DKI Jakarta Office will officiate this program.

Wally Saleh, Vice President for Business Development and External Affairs of PT Shell Indonesia said, “Shell has a strong commitment to be a good neighbour wherever we operate. Through this educational safety workshop, Shell provides significant contribution of efforts to improve safety standards and prevent violence at schools head-on.  By conducting business responsibly, Shell hopes to help build better lives for the surrounding community in all places that we have business activities.”

The STEP, supported by Sejiwa, the local implementing partner, aims to disseminate the safety measures and leadership to school teachers and help teachers realize their outstanding potential to positively impact their students. The workshop also endeavours to develop a disciplined and positive teacher mindset and nurtures encouraging and role-modelling teacher behaviours. It equips teachers with a range of practical communication skills to enable them to more effectively motivate, guide and encourage students.

The safety standards session offers additional knowledge and awareness on safety. For instance, the Emergency Response session will help participants take correct actions in the event of emergency. The Road Safety session will impart skills for teachers to communicate to their students the importance of road safety. The Basic Fire Fighting will impart knowledge that can be essential to protect lives in the event of fire. The Recycling session will focus on environment and the Risk Mitigation session instruct participants on how to identify, to understand and to take actions for any potential risk in their environment.

Part of the sessions will also touch on  “Introduction on Bullying”. It aims to equip teachers with the knowledge they need to recognize bullying in their school. Bullying takes on various forms, from intimidation, extortion and ridicule of more junior pupils to abusive and sometimes harsh teacher behaviours and punishment methods. The session also offers ideas how to promote important values such as respect, responsibility, integrity, discipline and tolerance in school. Based on a survey by Sejiwa in 2005, serious bullying cases were identified in Indonesian schools but was largely unacknowledged and unaddressed.

Twenty-eight teachers and headmasters from various public and private senior high schools in Jakarta will participate in the event.
