Shell Indonesia Launches “Safety Days 2007” (English)

05/06/2007

Shell Indonesia today launched “Safety Days 2007” in parallel with other Shell operating units in the world to re-emphasize its strong focus and commitment on the implementation of Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) in the workplace. Shell Safety Days 07 will take place June 5th and October 16th and will give employees, contractors and third parties, an excellent opportunity to build on the success of last year’s Safety programme by engaging them in a wide range of activities focusing on safety.  Safety Days aims to ensure that all Shell’s employees are aware of the key factors to reduce site incidents and manage risks. It also aims to share this knowledge and safety practices with the public and other corporations so as to help raise the safety standards within the country.

Rob Routs, Executive Director Downstream, Royal Dutch Shell, said, “Shell is passionate about safety and we are one of the global corporate leaders for HSSE.  Shell Safety Day is a global initiative that involves all Shell business around the world.  We want to drive home the message to every employee the importance of making sure that every one who works for us, regardless if they are our employees or our contractors, gets to go home every day as safe, sound and healthy as when they come to work.”

As the world’s leading oil and gas company employing more than 109,000 people, Shell prioritizes HSSE issues in the working environment. The objective of conducting the Safety Days is to raise the profile of safety risk management and focus energy for performance improvement, and also to trigger HSSE improvement activities to take forward with personal and team action plans. This activity is also aimed to encourage a culture of ‘compliance’ (comply with the law, standards and procedure) and ‘intervention’ (intervene in unsafe or non-compliant situation).

Commented Darwin Silalahi, Country Chairman and CEO, Shell Indonesia at the event, “At Shell, we believe we are all safety leaders. What each of us does individually results in our collective culture.  We must each take personal responsibility for creating a culture of compliance and intervention.”

Shell Indonesia will strive to continously improve its safety performance as it benchmarks itself against other Shell operating units worldwide. At the same time it hopes to share its best practices with other companies in Indonesia and to ultimately encourage an overall increase in the HSSE performance, awareness and implementation in the country.
