Shell Reemphasizes Strong Commitment to Indonesia: Appoints First Indonesian Country Chairman/CEO and Announces New Company Name (English)

05/06/2007

Royal Dutch Shell today announced the appointment of Darwin Silalahi as the company’s first ever Indonesian Country Chairman and CEO.  Mr. Silalahi’s appointment follows the firm’s name change from PT. Kridapetra Graha to PT. Shell Indonesia.  Both announcements reinforce the growing importance of Indonesia to Shell Downstream’s regional growth strategy.

Rob Routs, Executive Director Downstream, Shell, during his Jakarta visit said “These announcements underscore our commitment to grow our business in Indonesia and the region.  They cap a series of growth investments designed to better serve the needs of our customers.  We’re proud to attract strong local leaders like Darwin Silalahi, and, and we’re delighted to bring the strength of the Shell brand and operational excellence it stands for into the market.”

“I would like to personally thank Bob Moran, who has been the Country Chairman in Indonesia for the past three years. We value his significant contribution in successfully building our presence in Indonesia, in all areas of our businesses,” Mr Routs added.

Shell's historical links with Indonesia are strong. The origins of the oil industry in Indonesia and those of what subsequently became the Royal Dutch/Shell Group are closely connected. The discovery of commercial quantities of crude oil in Sumatra just over 100 years ago led directly to the formation of Royal-Dutch Petroleum. In the last several years, Shell has shown growth and development in all areas of their business in Indonesia.

  • Shell was the first international company to open retail outlets and now boasts 10 retail outlets in the Greater Jakarta area and directly generating more than 1000 new jobs. Beyond these ten outlets, many more are at different stages of development. Shell is committed to sustainable development and contributing to the local community in which they operate.
  • Shell’s lubricant business is growing at a fast pace and plans are in place to increase its market share for both the consumer and industrial markets. As the leading international lubricant brand in the market, Shell continues to see significant growth potential in Indonesia for the downstream business.
  • In April this year, Pertamina and Shell Indonesia established a joint venture partnership in the Aviation Fuels business, covering into-plane operations services, technical and management services and aviation fuel supply at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta.
  • Shell and Pertamina signed a Memorandum of Understanding in November 2006 focussing on upstream opportunities. Shell is actively seeking material opportunities to grow its upstream business in Indonesia with one of its strategies for growth is through partnerships. Shell looks forward to progressing its partnership with Pertamina in this and other areas.

Darwin Silalahi, newly appointed Country Chairman and CEO, Shell Indonesia, said,  “These are exciting times for Shell Indonesia. The downstream market is deregulating and the country is keen to increase oil and gas production. As one of the largest integrated oil and gas companies in the world, Shell has a lot to offer Indonesia in the oil and gas industry. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for me to deliver as the new local Chairman and CEO.”
