Participation in Rebuilding Aceh: Shell Donates Funds to the UN World Food Programme and Solar Systems to Syiah Kuala University (English)

19/12/2006

To commemorate the second anniversary of the devastating tsunami of 2004, Shell Companies in Indonesia announce the donation of funds to the World Food Program and Shell Solar Home Systems to Syiah Kuala University, Banda Aceh.

Bob Moran, Country Chairman and President Director for Shell Companies in Indonesia, said, “Shell is committed to helping rebuild Aceh through these contributions of funds to ongoing projects and solar systems training to the University. This is part of our efforts to help rebuild lives in these communities which underwent one of the worst ever natural disasters in history.”

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Shipping Service has provided vital support for Tsunami-damaged communities in Indonesia.  Despite the considerable progress over the past year, more than 70,000 houses are still to be rebuilt. Shell Companies in Indonesia has donated USD100,000 in funds for logistics transportation in supporting the program.

"The World Food Programme welcomes this generous contribution from Shell which will help fund the continued operations of the WFP Shipping Service assisting the recovery and reconstruction of Tsunami-damaged communities in Aceh and Nias,” said Mohamed Saleheen, Representative and Country Director for WFP Indonesia. “The Shipping Service has been playing a vital role in building back a better Aceh and has helped in the recovery of the local economy."

At the same time, Shell has also donated two solar home systems for training purposes to the Mechanical Engineering Faculty at Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh, to be used as teaching aids for the university students. The objective of this project is to create awareness for photovoltaic technology (solar technology to generate electricity) amongst young local people.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Samsul Rizal, M.Eng, Vice Rector For Academic Affair at Syiah Kuala University said, “In the post-tsunami era, renewable energy such as solar is the best option for Aceh as we are located in a sunny coastal area. Solar energy is abundant, local and emission-free.   It is also the most logical option as it is easy to install and is an individualized system, thus does not need feasibility studies to implement. At the moment, more than 10.000 solar systems are already installed and utilized in Aceh to solve the energy needs. With this donation, our students will be able to understand the technology required for solar systems.”

About the World Food Program

On 26 December 2004, the deadliest tsunami in recorded history killed over 200,000 people. Roads, schools, health clinics, and hundreds of thousands of homes in coastal regions around the Indian Ocean-all were destroyed in just hours.

At the request of the United Nations Office of the Recovery Coordinator (UNORC) and the Government of Indonesia's Agency for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (BRR), the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) Shipping Service was established in November 2005 to support the reconstruction of Aceh and Nias.

The Multi Donor Fund (MDF) has provided the initial USD24.7 million funding for capital purchases of materials handling equipment and operational vehicles etc. as well as the operating costs for 8 months of a FREE humanitarian cargo service.

The Shipping Service's activities have included:

  • Managing sea transport for UN and NGO's humanitarian and reconstruction materials for Tsunami-damaged communities with a fleet of landing crafts and conventional vessels.
  • Providing logistics coordination, port captains, load consolidation, materials handling equipment-vital services to the reconstruction of Aceh and Nias.
  • Contributing to the livelihoods of vulnerable communities along the Aceh, Nias and Simeulue coasts by moving building materials needed for communities to develop.
  • Establishing temporary landing sites and repaired sea-side access points to serve more than 30 locations in Aceh and on nearby islands where commercial operators have been unable to access, or have been, unwilling to serve.
  • Delivering, to date, a total of over 93,396 metric tons (244,860 cubic metres of cargo).
  • Serving over 80 organizations: UN agencies, NGOs and Indonesian government agencies.

WFP Shipping Service continues with planned nationalisation of its workforce; capacity building at ports and harbours; and, seeking to handover its routes to viable commercial alternatives. On cessation, all fixed assets and non-fixed assets (except telecommunications and information technology equipment) will be transferred to the local government authorities at a time to be determined in consultation by the BRR.
