Shell Companies in Indonesia is pleased to inaugurate its Clean Water Pump Project for the community near its Balikpapan warehouse as part of its ongoing sustainable development program. The project will provide the community with access to clean water, health and environmental sanitation and reduced health risks. Bob Moran, CEO and President Director for Shell Companies in Indonesia said, “Shell strives to take a constructive interest in social matters which may not be directly related to the business. Our guiding philosophy is that wherever we operate, we endeavor to be a part of the local community. We constantly look for appropriate ways to contribute to the general wellbeing of the community and by contributing to sustainable development; Shell hopes to help build better lives in all places that we operate. The Clean Water Pump Project demonstrates Shell's corporate social responsibility to our fence-line community and ultimately improves their life and health quality.” Shell’s warehouse in Balikpapan is situated in Gunung Sari Ulu and it serves industrial lubricants for the majority of mining companies in Kalimantan. Local communities encircle this warehouse and Shell is the only large company to be operating in the Gunung Sari Ulu area. There are 5 neighborhoods situated adjacent to the warehouse; RT 02, RT 04, RT 05, RT 12 and RT 14. Most of the population (78%) earns their livelihood as construction or rig laborers; while the rest is civil servants or jobless. Until recently, the community, especially RT 04 and RT 05, were in dire need of clean water for their daily needs, such as cooking, washing, etc. The locations of the area, which are thirty to forty meters high from sea level, complicate the situation. Normally to fulfill their water needs, people from the community will store water from rainfall in a tank. In the dry season, they have to buy water from a private water provider located downtown about two kilometers away. To fill up a water tank of 1,500 liters capacity costs Rp. 200,000 and it is usually used up for 2-3 days for three households. The Clean Water Pump Project consists of building a 120-meter deep water-pump at RT 04 and several distribution pipes that will channel water to the community in both RT 04 and RT 05. A water tank with a capacity of 5,000 liters will ensure the community of 150 households with its much-needed water supply, conveniently and free of charge, even during the dry season. Suparyono, Head of Gunung Sari Ulu said, “We are pleased with Shell’s participation in building its surrounding community in Gunung Sari Ulu. By integrating and balancing the economic, social and environmental aspects of its stakeholders, Shell demonstrates doing business in a responsible way. We hope Shell’s presence in the area will make for more positive impact within the community.” |
