Reemphasizing their focus and commitment on the implementation of Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) in the workplace, Shell Companies in Indonesia today launched "Safety Week 2006" in parallel with other Shell operating units in the world. Held from June 12 to 16 in vaious venues including Shell facilities, this program is conducted to focus on the attention and energy of all Shell’s employees on the key factors that will reduce incident and to manage the risks, while sharing this knowledge and practice with the public and other corporations. As the world’s leading oil and gas company employing 109,000 people, Shell prioritizes HSSE issues in the working environment. It is a global regulation which has to be understood and implemented by all Shell employees around the world. The HSSE Hearts and Minds is required at all Shell’s operating units as one of the important tools to reduce accident rate. Other objectives of conducting the "Safety Week 2006" is to raise the profile of safety risk management and focus energy for performance improvement, and also to trigger HSSE improvement activities to take forward with personal and team action plans. This activity is also aimed to encourage a culture of ‘compliance’ (comply with the law, standards and procedure) and ‘intervention’ (intervene in unsafe or non-compliant situation). At Safety Week 2006, Shell will also introduce the ‘Golden Rules’ for all of their employees in order to emphasize individual responsibility while encouraging and respecting others. The three Shell HSSE Golden Rules are: You and I: - Comply with law, standards and procedures
- Intervene in unsafe or non-compliant situations
- Respect our neighbors
The Golden Rules are about changing how the employees act all the time in every operation and activity which are being introduced through the business line or functional line, starting with leadership teams. Bob Moran, Country Chairman Shell Companies in Indonesia at the event said, "We always strive to position HSSE as the top priority amongst our employees. Thus, we hope that after the launch of Safety Week 2006 and the implementation of The Golden Rules, we can minimize HSSE hazardous risks in the workplace and become a role model in the community." Erman Suparno, Minister of Manpower and Transmigration of the Republic Indonesia said, "I personally support this activity conducted by Shell which shows the company’s strong commitment on HSSE issues. Keeping in mind that HSSE has a become a need for both corporations and workers alike, there should be more initiative to implement HSSE measures in the workplace in a new paradigm or pattern that emphasizes and carry out HSSE as a crucial part that determines work productivity and business sustainability." Heldiansyah, HSSE Manager Shell Companies in Indonesia said, "HSSE is very important and it’s vital that we put them into practice in our operations and activities across the organization. The supervisors and the team have to work hand in hand because we all have a part to play in improving safety throughout the company." With the rollout of the Safety Week 2006, Shell Companies in Indonesia hopes it can can improve its safety performance internally while at the same time inspire other companies in Indonesia to increase their HSSE performance, awareness and implementation.
