Being a Good Neighbor: Shell Inaugurates Dengue Fever Prevention Program in South Jakarta (English)

19/10/2006

Shell Companies in Indonesia are pleased to announce their Dengue Fever Prevention Program, specifically in the South Jakarta area working together with KuIS (Koalisi untuk Indonesia Sehat or Coalition for Healthy Indonesia). This is part of Shell’s ongoing social investment program in Indonesia.

Bob Moran, Country Chairman and President Director for Shell Companies in Indonesia, said, “Shell has a strong commitment to be a good neighbor wherever we operate. Through this community health project, Shell provides significant contribution of efforts to tackle dengue fever problems in the area head-on. By conducting business responsibly, Shell hopes to help build better lives for the surrounding community in all places that we have business activities.”

As of September 2005, there were over 61.000 recorded cases of dengue fever in Indonesia. Jakarta contributes 30% of the total number with a high percentage of that occurring in South Jakarta. Despite the prescribed preventive actions (Draining, Closing and Burying) conducted by individual members of community, until recently there is yet no integrated group activity to prevent dengue fever. The community-based Dengue Fever Prevention Program will be implemented in the Tegal Parang Village in both administrative units or Rukun Warga (RW). The location is adjacent to Shell’s fuels retail outlet in Mampang Prapatan. Shell-KuIS will collaborate in the program implementation throughout the project.

Dr. Firman Lubis, Chairman of KuIS Executive Board, said, “Dengue fever is often handled through curative approach rather than a preventive one while the fact remains that preventive methods are always cheaper, more efficient and more effective. Through this program, KuIS and Shell hope to create a positive impact by making dengue fever a priority health issue in the community.”

To ensure successful implementation of this program, Shell and KuIS will invite various groups in the neighborhood to actively participate. These groups include local health cadres (Posyandu), families especially fathers, cured dengue fever victims and their family, women activists in the community, youth organization, local administration officials, 4-6 grade students in six elementary schools in the village and elementary school teachers and school administration.
