Yogyakarta, 13 December 2006 - Shell is proud to be one of the sponsor for the Better Air Quality Conference in Yogyakarta, 13-15 December 2006 as part of its global endeavour to participate in air quality improvement. Since 2001, BAQ has been the leader in gathering stakeholders in Asia for air quality management. Through the coordination and contribution of the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (CAI-Asia), private sector sponsors and supporting organizations, the BAQ was launched as a regional and international workshop the following year. With hundreds of participants attending BAQ, the event is now held every two years. At the conference, Dr. John Unsworth, Technology Manager, Alternative Fuels & Fuels Strategy for Shell Global Solutions in the Fuels Technology Group at Shell Technology Centre Thornton, Chester in the United Kingdom, will speak about “Fuelling Sustainable Mobility.” “Shell is already one of the global leaders in the development of advanced biofuels, which offer the lowest overall carbon dioxide emissions without taking resources from the food chain as bio-fuel feedstock. As the world’s largest blender of transport biofuels, Shell is investing in the production of cleaner burning synthetic diesel fuel (i.e. GTL, Gas-To-Liquids). At the same time, Shell is continuing to invest to further improve the environmental performance of fuels made from crude oil,” says Dr. Unsworth. A more diverse and innovative mix of transport fuels will become available to support cleaner and more efficient engines. However, gasoline and diesel made from crude oil will continue to be the mainstay of road transportation fuels well into the future. The challenge for industry and society is how to cost effectively meet the increased demand for mobility while reducing local and global environmental impacts. Shell fully supports the adoption of an integrated approach to air quality improvement. The main benefit available from fuel quality improvement requires a combination of appropriate engine and after-treatment technologies. To meet both new fuel specifications and the projected high growth in demand for road transportation fuels in Asia, the timing, phasing and level of new fuel specifications in Asia must be designed to enable progressive upgrading of existing refinery processing capacity, alongside investment in new capacity.
