Shell Indonesia started operations of its first fuels retail outlet in Indonesia. This is the first step of Shell’s investment plan in Indonesia for the downstream sector, and is a visible manifestation of the implementation of Oil and Gas Deregulation Law No. 22/2001. Shell becomes the first international oil company to retail fuels in Indonesia following an absence from this market for the last 40 years.
At the retail outlet in Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang, Shell offers high quality Shell Super and Shell Super Extra gasoline, with octane levels of 92 and 95 respectively. The fuels are specially formulated to provide more power for the customer’s car or motorbike, while keeping the engine clean. The Shell Station has modern, fast flowing pumps, which provide a digitally printed receipt to assure customers they receive the correct quantity, and a convenience store. Shell plans to offer subsidised fuels in its retail stations to complete the range of products to meet customer needs. The implementation of Presidential Regulation 55/2005 is now being discussed with the relevant authorities. With more than 220 million people, Indonesia is a key strategic market for Shell in the Asia Pacific region. Shell has a long-term commitment to invest in Indonesia in the energy sector, including the fuels retail business.
Bob Moran, Country Chairman Shell Indonesia, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell, said, “We are proud to be back in the fuels business in Indonesia. Shell is the world’s undisputed leader in fuels technology, and we are keen to share our quality offering with the Indonesian customer. This site is the first of a series of outlets under development, and we are prepared to make significant investments in the fuels retailing business in Indonesia. We are confident that Shell’s participation in this sector will provide added value to consumers in Indonesia.”
Erie Soedarmo ME, PhD, Director of Processing and Marketing, Directorate General Migas said, “With the impending end of Pertamina’s Public Service Obligation (PSO), we have opened the downstream sector for new players. We are pleased to see that Shell is the first to actually commence operations. I believe that healthy competition by reputable players will create a properly functioning market-based fuels distribution system, which generates investment and job opportunities, leads to much improved environmental standards and service levels for consumers.” On the same note, Tubagus Haryono, Chairman of BPH Migas (Downstream Regulatory Body), added, “The oil and gas world in Indonesia has been enriched by the presence of a new player with substantial expertise and resources. This is good news for Indonesia and the consuming public in general as it means that customers will have a choice which will lead to improved service levels. With reputable oil companies like Shell entering the market, the country’s supply security will improve.” Ari H. Soemarno, Corporate Senior Vice President, Marketing & Trading at Pertamina added, “Pertamina welcomes Shell as a new player in the fuels retail market. In this new era, Shell’s presence in Indonesia will provide an opportunity for Pertamina to benchmark its offerings and performance. We are looking forward to compete with them for the customer.” Mohammad Memed Madra, the Dealer who will operate the outlet with his crew of 45 fully trained men and women, says: “I am grateful for the opportunity Shell has given me to run their very first retail station in the country. I am impressed with Shell’s commitment to quality, service, safety and the environment. Customers will feel the difference I believe.” Shell is enthusiastic about the opportunity to deliver quality fuel to the Indonesian motorist, and contribute to environmental conservation through increased fuel quality and engineering and operating standards. Shell operates in over 140 countries and territories and employs more than 112,000 people. Shell is best known to the public for its fuel service stations, its high quality lubricants and for exploring and producing oil and gas on land and offshore; but Shell also delivers a much wider range of energy solutions and petrochemicals to customers. These include transporting and trading oil and gas, marketing natural gas, producing and selling fuel for ships and planes, generating electricity and providing energy efficiency advice. Shell also produce and sell petrochemical building blocks to industrial customers globally and is investing in making renewable and lower-carbon energy sources competitive for large-scale use.
