Sponsorship helps house African children
21/01/2008
Hannah Rattay, START Business Consultant, Shell Global Solutions International BV, was sponsored to participate in a three-week project for God’s Golden Acre (GGA) Khayelihle, a charity helping children orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS-related illnesses and violence. As part of a 13-strong team, Hannah helped to build a house for an 18-year-old man and his extended family in the South African province of KwaZulu-Nat
Rattay worked with Kusasa, a non-governmental organisation in London, UK, which raises awareness of poverty in South Africa and works directly with GGA in the country.
Rattay initially raised $1,000 herself, and because the sponsorship from Shell Global Solutions enabled her to take part in the project, she was able to donate the money she had raised 50:50 to Kusasa and GGA.
Salome van Jarsveld, from Kusasa, says, “I am delighted that Hannah was able to commit to the project and will return to Europe to raise awareness of the poverty in South Africa. Kusasa is working with GGA to help alleviate these issues in a sustainable way and to encourage families to support themselves within their community.”
