Award-winning strategies

18/03/2008

The industry goals of efficient processes, safety and environmental friendliness are being tackled from many angles at Shell.

Shell’s catalyst business, Criterion Catalysts & Technologies, developed the next-generation catalyst CENTINEL Gold in response to US Environmental Protection Agency requirements in 2006 for a reduction in the sulphur content of on-road diesel from 500 to 15 ppm.

Together with reactor internals that were designed for deep conversion units like the ultra-low-sulphur diesel ones, this catalyst innovation was recognised as the Commercial Technology of the Year in the prestigious Platts Global Energy Awards.

Shell Global Solutions’ Carbon and Energy Management consultancy, winner of the 2007 Petroleum Economist Cleaner Energy Initiative, assesses a client’s energy use and carbon dioxide production and compares its current position with optimum operating practices. Strategies for mitigation are then proposed, which may include energy-efficiency or operational-improvement programmes.

Shell Smart Choke hardware was a finalist in the World Oil Awards 2007 Best Production Technology category. Developed by Shell Global Solutions, the Smart Choke is designed to mitigate slugging and minimise pressure fluctuations using a single valve at the production platform. As a result of increased flow stability, operators have the confidence to run closer to system limits, thereby helping to increase production while maintaining safe operations.
