Pertamina aims for world-class energy performance
26/03/2007
The Indonesian refining market is opening up and competitive pressure is increasing. Consequently, the country’s national oil company, Pertamina, has contracted Shell Global Solutions International BV to carry out a study of organisational effectiveness in energy management at its Balongan oil refinery in Indramayu, West Java. With a capacity of 125,000 barrels a day, it is one of the largest of the seven oil refineries owned by Pertamina and supplies fuel to Jakarta and West Java.
Pertamina had made good progress with improving refinery performance; however, the company believed that by working alone its ambitious goals would not be reached quickly enough.
A team of three consultants from Shell Global Solutions will work with refinery staff to look at areas for improvement in the management of the plant with the aim of accelerating progress towards world-class energy performance. This pathfinder study will create a road map for sustainable energy management and a project implementation plan for the refinery.
Similar work at Shell Group refineries and petrochemical plants has reduced energy use by typically 2–7% for refineries and 3–5% for petrochemical plants.
Harijanto of Pertamina comments, “By working with Shell Global Solutions, we hope to maximise the performance of the plant. In particular, we believe that the pathfinder study will help us to identify areas for improvement in terms of leadership, performance management and staff competency development.”
