Shell participates in new centre for biofuel excellence

22/12/2007

The US-based Colorado Center for Biorefining and Biofuels (C2B2) – a research venture between business, government and academia – aims to be a world-class provider of biotechnologies for the chemical and fuels industries.

Shell has agreed to participate in the consortium over the next two years, and will be supporting research efforts as well as bringing knowledge of the market and how technology can be translated into commercially viable products. The research projects will also create educational opportunities for the next generation of chemical and biological engineers.

C2B2 will work to create new technologies for the production of transportation fuels as well as other valuable bio-products such as agricultural fertilisers, synthetic clothing fibres, plastics and commercial chemicals.

“C2B2 brings together public and private partners with the skills and the commitment to change the way we produce fuels for our cars and make the products that we use in our daily lives,” Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado commented.

Paul Hamilton, President, Shell Global Solutions (US) Inc., speaking on behalf of Shell, added, “Shell believes that US energy security will be achieved through diversity of energy, and that technology is an essential response to that challenge. We know from experience that collaboration with organisations like C2B2 whose strengths differ from our own often bears the fruit of good ideas.”
