Audi commends Shell Global Solutions in annual report

02/04/2007

Audi – whose high-performance cars are celebrated both on and off the racetrack – prides itself on its technical innovation. But even the most successful car manufacturer needs the support of collaborators who are equally inventive.

The car manufacturer has worked extensively with Shell Global Solutions in the past, and the latest milestone in their relationship is the development of Shell V-Power‡ Diesel motor racing fuel. In June 2006, a diesel car – the Audi R10 TDI powered by Shell V-Power Diesel LM 24 race fuel – won the 24 Heures du Mans race at Le Mans for the first time.

Shell V-Power Diesel race fuel uses revolutionary gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology. Shell GTL Fuel is synthesised from natural gas and has a high cetane level and exceptional purity, which means it burns more cleanly and efficiently than conventional diesel.

Audi acknowledges the value of Shell Global Solutions’ contribution to its success in its 2006 annual report. An interview with Wolfgang Warnecke of Shell Global Solutions’ PAE laboratory in Hamburg, Germany, describes Shell’s technical innovation in the development of the fuel that powers the R10 TDI cars. The report also features an article on Shell’s gas processing plant in Bintulu, Malaysia, where the GTL Fuel is produced, as well as one on the work by CHOREN on biomass-to-liquids technology and Iogen on the development of cellulose ethanol, both companies that are supported by Shell.

In the words of the annual report: “With the aid of this top-quality diesel, the R10 is virtually untouchable when it comes to endurance on the track.”
