Fast facts
Who we are
- Shell Global Solutions’ staff includes technical specialists covering refining, hydrocarbon supply chain, carbon and energy management, operational excellence and the energy challenge.
- The Shell Group (“Shell”) has several chief scientists who specialise in fields directly related to Shell Global Solutions, such as chemistry and catalysis, separations and materials.
What we do
- Shell Global Solutions provides technical and operational support to Shell, which produces around 3.5 million barrels of oil equivalent a day and is active in more than 130 countries and territories worldwide.
- Shell Global Solutions and Shell’s catalyst company, Criterion Catalysts & Technologies, offer leading technology in producing ultra-low-sulphur diesel as demanded by the changing regulatory framework.
- As a technical partner to Ferrari, Shell provides fuels and lubricants to the Formula One racing team. Shell Global Solutions provides full analytical support for fuels and oils and a trackside laboratory to help drivers maximise performance at all times. That racetrack experience can then be applied to Shell’s forecourt fuels.
- By using Shell Global Solutions’ thermal conversion processes, refiners can upgrade a range of hydrocarbons. As the market leader with more than 100 licensed thermal conversion units, Shell accounts for about 40% of the world’s thermal conversion unit capacity, with units in over 60 locations.
- Shell Global Solutions Carbon Energy Management Consultancy won the Petroleum Economist Cleaner Energy Initiative Award 2007.
By the numbers
- 9…The percentage of sustainable energy savings achieved by Shell’s Fredericia refinery in Denmark after implementing a carbon energy management programme.
- 44…The percentage by which maintenance costs fell because of benchmarking at the Statoil plant in Bergen, Norway. In addition, gas exports rose by 9.7%. The initiative reduced the plant’s work volume, which has freed personnel for alternative work.
- 800,000…The annual savings in tonnes of carbon dioxide delivered by Shell Global Solutions’ structured energy-efficiency programmes, along with 0.3 million tonnes of fuel: the equivalent of 160,000 hot-air balloons of carbon dioxide and 12,000 road tankers of fuel in an 180-km convoy.
