Andrew, Jacob and Megan took part in the Shell Step undergraduate placement programme which aims to give students relevant and meaningful experience of the world of work.

Working at Powerchex, a pre-employment screening company based in East London, Andrew worked on a PR and marketing project for the company.  Jacob worked at Evolve, a technology consultancy based in Kingston, Jacob began a remarketing project, which rapidly expanded to include a role restructuring the company.  Megan worked at Spectrum, a charity providing services for people with autistic spectrum disorders, Megan completed a re-branding project and developed a fundraising campaign.

Having wowed the judges at his local final, Andrew scooped the top spot at the Southern event and Jacob and Megan were runners-up.  All three win a place in the national final.

Andrew said: “I’m gobsmacked to have got through to the national final – the other candidates were amazingly strong.  Shell Step has given me so much experience of working with a small business.  I’ve learnt a lot about how small companies work, and about PR and marketing through my project.  I’d really like to thank Alexandra Kelly and the team at Powerchex for everything.”

Alexandra Kelly, of Powerchex said: “Powerchex have been working with Shell Step students for four years, and the rewards to the company are always incredible.  Andrew gave us impressive exposure and completed a project which we had neither the specialist skills nor the time to do.  We wish him every success in the national final”.

James Smith, Chairman of Shell UK, said: “Every year tens of thousands of students in the UK experience the challenge of moving from the world of study to the world of work and Shell Step is a direct response to that.  Each year the programme gives students relevant and meaningful experience of the world of work and we wish Andrew all the best in his future career.”

Shell Step, which places around 600 students with small and medium-sized companies every year, is part of Shell’s commitment to developing skills in the UK.  Students who take part in the programme, now in its 22nd year, are given the opportunity to apply their skills in a real business environment which hopefully makes them more attractive to future employers whilst the participating companies, in many cases, report a significant impact on their bottom line.
