Shell V-Power/Shell V-Power Racing - Tech spec

How Shell V-Power's and Shell V-Power Racing's composition is designed to make a difference to your drive.

Scientist examining test tubesHelping drivers achieve extraordinary movement is what separates our fuels from others. So what makes Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Racing different? The Friction Modification Technology (FMT) used in both products is formulated to reduce friction between the cylinder and piston rings, a critical area of the engine where lubrication is difficult to achieve. FMT is designed to help the engine turn more freely, and so support more efficient energy transfer from the fuel to the wheels.

In addition to this Shell V-Power Racing is a higher octane fuel (XX RON) designed to help maximize the performance of many modern engines with adaptive spark timing capacity.

It’s not just fuel. It’s the feeling of driving with Ferrari fuel for the road.

How Shell scientists use Formula One as a laboratory for fuel development.

Shell Track LabFor over 60 years, Shell and Ferrari have shared a passion for performance.  A dedicated team of our scientists in Shell’s Centre for Fuels Development use the Formula One environment as a laboratory, testing fuels and lubricant formulations under the most extreme conditions. We work on many factors that affect a car’s engine, then use these insights when formulating Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Racing, helping to benefit drivers in many countries.

Continuous development

Our scientists remain track-side at all Grand Prix races, where they provide a full analytical service, constantly monitoring the performance of the fuel and oil for the Ferrari racing team. Feedback on some of these learnings goes into our development of Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Racing for road cars.

What makes Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Racing so effective for your engine.

A Shell scientist at workSo why put Shell V-Power or Shell V-Power Racing in your tank? Its unique and advanced formulation has several key components. Powerful engine cleaning technology is designed to remove engine deposits for more efficient burning, and Friction Modification Technology (FMT) is formulated to help reduce friction for better responsiveness.

Powerful cleansing

While driving, deposits can develop around a car engine’s inlet valves, impeding the air flow and reducing power. Both Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Racing are designed to reduce the build-up of deposits and help remove existing ones, enabling the fuel to burn more efficiently.  This effective deposit control can help keep a new engine running like new for longer. Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Racing can also help rejuvenate older engines.

Friction Modification Technology

Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Racing also contains our Friction Modification Technology (FMT), whose special components are designed to coat the cylinder wall. Friction reduction between the cylinder wall and the piston inside the engine helps to increase the total energy delivered to the wheels, to aid overall driving performance.

High Octane

Shell V-Power Racing is a high octane fuel (XX RON). This enhanced octane rating is designed to help provide improvements in power delivery and to help drivers achieve maximum performance from octane responsive engines. And even vehicles designed for standard octane levels may benefit.

This video demonstrates how Shell’s specially modified 1.8 litre GM Vectra is designed to test fuels using three separate fuel systems.

It explains how the vehicle is fed alternately by two separate fuels, whilst a third system flushes and stores the fuel once it has been discarded. All of these processes are monitored by an on-board computer system, enabling engineers to record engine speed, road speed, ignition timing and fuel performance. This gives them the data they need to accurately compare advanced fuels, such as Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Racing, against other market fuels.

Shell V-Power tested with Ford Mondeo

This video demonstrates how a specially modified 2 litre, 16-valve fuel-injected Ford Mondeo is able to test fuels using 2 separate fuel systems, backed up by a Motorola engine management system.

Thanks to this system Shell is able to compare the performance of different fuels on the road in real-time and focus on the cleansing benefits of advanced fuels, like Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Racing, against other typical market fuels.
