MICHAEL SCHUMACHER AND RUBENS BARRICHELLO ENJOY A SLOWER FORM OF MOTOR SPORT Reigning Formula One World Champion, Michael Schumacher and team mate Rubens Barrichello stopped at the Shell Eco-Marathon UK en route to the British Grand Prix. The event, now in its 29th year, aims to find the world’s most fuel efficient vehicle. Teams from all around the United Kingdom and Europe took part, all hoping to win the title of ‘World's most fuel-efficient vehicle’, and in turn gain an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. Competition for this year’s Shell Eco-Marathon UK was very tough and poor weather made a new world record unlikely, however three teams from France were still fighting for the honour of being the most fuel efficient vehicle on the day. At the end of the event, Microjoule from France took the honours with a figure of 8263mpg. Schumacher commented: ‘What the teams and Shell are doing here at Rockingham is amazing. It sounds unbelievable how little fuel is used to get the cars to travel such a distance, I am told that if we used a Shell Eco-Marathon car on Sunday I would be able to drive three World Championships without stopping for fuel, that would certainly give us a great competitive advantage – it may not be too fast, but I wouldn’t have to make many pit stops!’ In the hotly contest Autocar Schools Class, Intercop, from the Newland House School in Twickenham, took the honours with a final fuel consumption of 1336mpg. While the top British entry was Team Green from Somerset with 4866mpg.
