Hello everyone,

After a three week respite the Spanish Grand Prix is fast approaching – this has been the first real break of the year so far, it has given everyone a chance to reflect on how the season is unravelling. For the teams it has been a valuable opportunity and last week they spent a few days here in Barcelona testing.

Besides making a regular appearance on the race calendar, teams often come to Barcelona to test during the year. So while all the teams have good experience of this race track and a lot of technical data at their fingertips it does mean that it is even tougher to gain an advantage. So competition could potentially be much closer here than at other tracks.

Being in Europe has a huge impact on the teams’ logistics programme as all the race equipment can now be transported directly to the track by road. So when you are watching TV this weekend you’ll see for the first time this year the team trucks and motor homes in full livery lining the paddock.

Several days before the team personnel get to work, the paddock area transforms itself. The trucks are converted into work stations and state of the art motor homes are set up – complete with kitchens, offices, dining areas and press rooms.

It’s change for us at Shell too. For the first three flyaway races our trackside laboratory has been located within the Ferrari compound in the paddock. However for the European races, the track lab which is transported directly from Maranello, will take residence within the Ferrari trucks backing onto the garage. As always we will be based in the lab carrying out analysis on the Shell fuel and lubricants - for the Shell team this track lab is a home away from home.

I hope you enjoy the Spanish Grand Prix!

Ian
