Animal Testing Review Panel Report
A panel composed of external representatives, assisted by Shell representatives, is reviewing and commenting on Shell's Animal Testing Standard, management processes, and progress made on our commitment to minimise the amount of animal testing. The panel reports on an annual basis and critically examines Shell’s reporting of its use of animals and the rationales for individual programmes. The panel is also working with Shell to ensure best practice in laboratories and discuss Shell's support for the development and applications of the
3Rs (reduction, refinement and replacement).
In 2006, the panel has specifically welcomed our:
- Efforts to expedite reporting, which resulted in earlier and fuller returns in 2006;
- Engagement with regulators, typically through industry groups, to promote sound yet proportionate regulation;
- Continued support for research in new methods for effluent testing which could significantly reduce the numbers of fish used.
As in previous years, the panel noted that the number of animals used is determined by regulatory demands and therefore by attitudes to regulation, which differ between the US and Europe. It therefore supports very strongly Shell’s engagement with regulators, typically through industry groups, to promote sound yet proportionate regulation.
