Energy efficiency

Improving the energy efficiency of our operations is another important way we are reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

We continue to improve the energy efficiency in our refineries and chemical plants by operating them closer to their full production capacity, by having fewer shutdowns, and by running our Energise™ energy efficiency programme and Business Improvement Review (BIR) process at most sites.

Shell Global Solutions developed the  Energise™ programme, which uses advanced energy modelling and benchmarking to help identify areas where improvements can be made. This programme was pursued by our refineries and has now been integrated into the new BIR process.

As a result, our refineries now have their own resources on site focused on implementing the necessary changes and tracking progress.

We have also launched a three-year capital investment programme specifically aimed at boosting refinery energy efficiency.

These initiatives have reduced our GHG emissions by nearly 1 million tonnes a year and saved us more than $70 million annually at our refineries and chemical plants.

In 2007, we launched a new energy efficiency programme in our upstream business.
