Our biodiversity strategy 2005-2010
The emphasis up to 2010 is on implementing what we have said we will do in our Biodiversity Standard; to continue to be a "leader" in this area; to demonstrate by doing; and to make a positive contribution to conserving global biodiversity.
The strategy was developed in consultation with representatives from over 50 conservation, government and other business organisations. Below are the key parts of the strategy:
Closing the gap between our Standard and implementation on the ground
- By the end of March 2006 we completed Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) for operations in World Conservation Union (IUCN) Category I-IV protected areas.
- By the end of 2006 we confirmed what constitutes "areas of high biodiversity value " (AHBVs). By the end of 2007 we will have prepared BAPs in all (AHBVs) where we operate.
- We will continue to integrate biodiversity in normal business processes as part of our commitment to sustainable development.
- We will strengthen the quality and timing of impact assessments in new project development.

- Pilot capacity building and skills transfer programmes with IUCN Asia and UNESCO.
- Participate in a pilot programme ,"ECOiSHARE", with UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre, Rio Tinto and BP to provide our ecological information into the public domain.
