CO2 management
By 2050 CO2 emissions must fall by half, yet energy demand is likely to double. A combination of measures is needed, including a price for CO2. Shell is involved in a number of carbon capture and storage demonstration projects. And our coal gasification technology produces less CO2 than conventional coal burning.
By 2050 global CO2 emissions must fall by at least 50%, while energy demand is predicted to double. No single solution exists. More efficient energy use is one approach. But governments must also create cap-and-trade mechanisms to make costly carbon capture and storage, CCS technology, attractive to companies. Demonstration projects will also need government funding. Shell is already involved in a number of CCS demonstration projects around the world, applying our technical know-how and experience. And our coal gasification technology is more energy efficient and produces less CO2 than conventional coal burning. Using this process makes capturing CO2 easier. We’re also helping to develop better biofuels that can help reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90%, compared to fossil fuel equivalents.
