Reporting in line with the UN Global Compact

The relationship between businesses and society is an evolving one. To help encourage businesses to play a more active and responsible role in society, the United Nations developed a “Global Compact” with business - with Shell support. We report in line with the principles of the Global Compact.

What is the Global Compact?

The Global Compact - opens in new window is a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.

Shell and the Global Compact

We have been active in the Compact since its inception. We are, participating in policy dialogues - contributing, for instance, to 'The Role of the Private Sector in Zones of Conflict' dialogue. We are actively supporting partnership initiatives – for example, acting as the lead business in Ethiopia on the “Growing Sustainable Business in the Least Developed Countries” partnership initiative with the United Nations Development Programme. We also participate in annual Global Compact learning forums and encourage our operations to participate in global compact networks locally. In March 2008 Shell hosted the Netherland’s Global Compact Symposium on ‘Partnerships for development’.

Reporting on progress against the Global Compact principles

The Global Compact asks companies to report annually on their progress against the Global Compact principles.  In response, we publish our annual  Shell Sustainability Report and this website, which together report in considerable depth on our progress in contributing to sustainable development. We also link that information to each of the individual Global Compacts principles. Click the links below to find out more. 

What are the ten principles?

Human rights 

Principle 1: Support and respect the protection of international human rights within their sphere of influence

Principle 2: Make sure their own corporations are not involved in human rights abuses.

Labour 

Principle 3: Freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining

Principle 4: The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour

Principle 5: The effective abolition of child labour

Principle 6: The elimination of discrimination in employment and occupation.

Environment 

Principle 7: Support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges

Principle 8: Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility

Principle 9: Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-corruption 

Principle 10: Work against all forms of corruption, including extortion and bribery.
