Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Shell and Shenhua, the two parties will explore opportunities to jointly develop more advanced coal gasification technology. In addition, they will discuss the possible application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. A joint working team will be set up to implement the agreement. Lim Haw-Kuang, Executive Chairman of Shell Companies in China, said: “Joining our strength with Shenhua, we will work together to provide China with the cutting-edge clean coal technology in order to help meet the country’s growing demand for energy and chemicals in a more sustainable way. The cooperation will provide Shell with further opportunities to apply its internationally recognized coal gasification technology.”
Wu Xiuzhang, Vice Chairman of Shenhua Coal to Liquid and Chemical Co., said: “To conduct joint research and development with Shell in the field of clean coal energy fits Shenhua’s strategy to develop clean and low carbon energy. We look forward to furthering the cooperation in this field, so as to make contributions to the clean utilisation of China’s coal resource.”
The MoU was signed alongside government meetings between China and the Netherlands on sustainable energy cooperation. Officials from the National Energy Administration of China and the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Netherlands witnessed the signing, after their meeting concluded with a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of energy between the two government departments. |
