Sustainable Development in Shell

For Shell, contributing to sustainable development (SD) means helping meet the world’s growing need for energy in economically, socially and environmentally responsible ways. It is the right thing to do, and it is good for our business.

For Shell, sustainable development is essentially about engaging with stakeholders to understand and manage the impacts - both positive and negative - that operations and products have on society and the environment today, and to identify business opportunities for the future.

Contributing to sustainable development is not only the right thing to do - it also makes good business sense. It helps us to maintain our licence to operate, manage risks better, and lower costs through improving energy efficiency, and enables us to grow (follow  the related website link to ‘The business case for SD in Shell’ for more details on this).

Translating this commitment into action is a massive undertaking, and although we still have much to do, we believe we are making good progress. We continue to improve our environmental and social performance, build new relationships with our stakeholders and be transparent in reporting our progress through the Shell Sustainability Report. To find out more about the ways in which SD is being embedded across the Shell Group, follow the related links to some of the main Shell Group SD pages.
