Energy efficiency
Shell chemicals companies are committed to using materials and energy efficiently to provide products and services.
Energy efficiency performance

The Chemicals Energy Index* result for 2006 was 92.5%, better than the target of 93.0% for the year despite significant planned and extended turnaround activities. Improvements have been made as a result of improved reliability at the steam cracker sites and by implementing the Energize™ Programme at multiple sites.
*The Energy Index measures the energy consumed per tonne of production, comparing current performance with that of the 2000 base line year which, by definition, is 100%.

SD goal: by 2007, improve overall energy efficiency by 7.5%, relative to 2002
How are we improving our energy efficiency?
Actions that are already underway at a number of locations to improve energy efficiency fall into three broad areas:
- Implementation of the Energise™ programme at major sites. The programme, which is run by Shell Global Solutions, comprises an audit of energy use at a site and the implementation of a range of recommended energy saving projects.
- Improving energy efficiency as part of other upgrades of facilities, infrastructure and asset integrity (particularly in the US).
- Delivery of energy efficiency gains through continual improvements in the operational reliability of production units.
