Ethylene oxide glycol ethers are extremely good solvents, having a bifunctional nature (ether-alcohol). They are often used as coupling agents in applications such as water-based paints due to their miscibility with both polar and non-polar substances. Shell chemicals companies produce a range of ethylene oxide glycol butyl ethers that are sold under the trade name OXITOL*. Butyl OXITOL is the Shell Chemicals name for ethylene oxide glycol monobutyl ether (also known as EB or EGBE). Butyl DIOXITOL* is the Shell Chemicals brand of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (DB or DGBE).
Ethylene oxide glycol ethers are mainly used in surface coatings, printing inks, cleaners, cosmetics and agrochemical formulations. They are also used as extractants, and as coalescing agents and flow improvers in water-based paints.
