What are ethers?
Most aliphatic ethers for solvent use are water clear, highly volatile and have a characteristic odour. Due to their high volatility, their use in coatings is limited. Ethers can form explosive peroxides in the presence of oxygen. Precautions need to be taken to prevent this reaction when the product is being stored or used.
How are ethers used?
The type of ether that Shell chemicals companies produce - isopropyl ether (IPE) - is only slightly miscible with water and is used as an extractant, as a reaction medium, and in pharmaceutical synthesis.
