Registration of product uses
To comply with the requirements of the REACH regulation, Shell chemicals companies expect the majority of their products to be registered before 1 December 2010, in line with the volume bandings specified in the REACH regulation. The registrations will be for specific uses of these products.
All downstream users of products should be aware that they are responsible for reviewing the product-specific use information provided by suppliers
For those products that are hazardous, we are required to demonstrate that they are safe to human health and the environment. After registration, the uses that have been registered and exposure scenarios describing safe handling procedures (where applicable) will be incorporated into our product safety datasheets.
In preparation for this, we have collated information about the way in which our products are handled and the potential for exposure to both humans and the environment. That information is now being shared on this website.
Downstream users of our products are responsible for reviewing the product-specific use information and deciding whether it describes the way in which they use Shell Chemicals products. If this is the case, there will be no need for further action. If, however, Shell Chemicals products are being used in a way that is not described, feedback is invited up to one year ahead of the intended registration deadline (in the majority of cases by 30 November 2009).

You may also find it helpful to download the European Chemicals Agency's (ECHA) document titled 'Chapter R12: Use Descriptor System'. In the appendices of this document you will find definitions of the codes that are used to define substance uses. We recommend you have this available when reviewing the use information for the products that you buy from us.
