Cutting-edge research is being undertaken on behalf of Shell Chemicals at the Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam (STCA). The following technologies were presented at the Shell Chemicals Technology Day on October 13, 2011.
- EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery)
- OMEGA (Only Monoethylene Glycol Advanced)
- GTL (Gas-to-liquids)
- DPC (Diphenyl carbonate)
EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery)
Surfactant-based Enhanced Oil Recovery is used to release oil trapped in the pores of rocks by surface tension. It essentially uses the same mechanism that removes grease and dirt from clothing in the laundry, literally washing the more difficult-to-reach oil out of reservoirs.
OMEGA (Only Monoethylene Glycol Advanced)
The OMEGA (Only Monoethylene Glycol Advanced) process is a method that uses less ethylene, water and steam than other processes to make MEG, the raw material for many household items including plastic bottles, packaging and man-made fibers.
GTL (Gas-to-liquids)
Gas-to liquids technology will help to unlock the potential of the world's gas reserves. The core process offers many potential routes, via synthetic gas processing, to chemicals.
DPC (Diphenyl carbonate)
New production processes for polycarbonate feedstocks are being developed that are expected to have significant advantages in terms of cost, safety and CO2 footprint. Polycarbonates are used in many products including CDs, DVDs and vehicle parts.
