Shell Chemicals sponsor UK industry skills award

13/03/2007

Shell Chemicals are sponsoring a UK chemical industry award to recognise the efforts of employers that have actively contributed to skills development among their organisation’s workforce.

The Skills Award is part of the Chemical Industries Association's (CIA) 2007 Chemical Industry Awards, which are designed to promote and showcase excellence among chemical companies, sites and individuals.

"I am delighted that Shell Chemicals are sponsoring the 2007 Skills Award," said Steve Elliott, CIA Chief Executive. "Shell chemicals companies are widely recognised as leading players - and therefore highly influential - in the skills area; success in which is crucial to the sustainability of the industry both in the UK and globally."

"Sponsoring this award category will enable Shell Chemicals to play a role in highlighting the contribution and commitment of our industry colleagues to skills development among employees in the UK chemical industry," added David Topliffe, Production Unit Manager Shell Higher Olefins Process and Waste Management at the Stanlow Chemicals Manufacturing plant, and a Shell Chemicals representative for the CIA.

Skills Award nominees will need to demonstrate innovative approaches to training and competence development; recognised excellence in performance management cascaded from leadership; a continuous learning approach to developing employees; any external accreditations and support for employees to gain external qualifications to aid their career development; a proven and sustained ability to attract potential employees; and being able to retain staff.

They will also need to outline how their achievements have contributed to sustainable development, and any learnings and good practices resulting from their achievements that could be valuable to others.

Nominations close on 30 March and the winner will be announced at a Chemical Industry Awards ceremony on 5 July at York in northern England.
